Getting started
What to expect from your first physiotherapy session
Apr 10, 2026 · 4 min read
Your first visit is about understanding your pain, assessing movement, and building a plan you can follow at home or online.
If you have never seen a physiotherapist, the first session can feel like an unknown. Here is what actually happens, so you can arrive prepared and get the most from it.
The conversation comes first
The session starts with questions: what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your work, sleep, and daily life. Your history matters as much as the physical exam, so it helps to think about these beforehand.
A hands-on assessment
Next is a physical assessment. Expect to move through some simple actions, bending, reaching, or walking, so the physiotherapist can see how you move and where it is limited. There may be some hands-on testing of specific joints and muscles.
Explanation and a plan
You should leave understanding what is likely going on in plain language, and what the plan is to address it. That usually includes a small set of exercises to start, advice on activity, and a sense of the expected timeline.
How to prepare
- Wear comfortable clothing you can move in
- Bring any relevant scans, reports, or a list of medications
- Note down your main goals, for example returning to a sport or sleeping through the night
- Be ready to describe your daily routine and work setup
After the session
For home visits and online consultations, you receive a personalized exercise plan you can follow at your own pace. Consistency with the plan between sessions is usually what drives progress, more than any single treatment.
